We want you to succeed in your driving test! The following tips may help. Good Luck!
Always the best way to handle your road test is by preparation. Make sure you practiced driving on residential streets, light traffic streets, and heavy busy traffic streets. Make sure you know the rules of the road, the signs etc…
Relax! Being too nervous will make you make lot of mistakes! Don’t think about the test, think of your driving. If the examiner is writing notes, don’t think you have failed the test! Just keep alert! Focus on the road. You have prepared for this day, now relax, and show the examiner that you know to drive, you can scan the road, you can turn safely, and you can park! Show your confidence! Break the ice maybe by asking the examiner before the test anything about the test that you are not sure of - However, during the test, try not to talk much. Be alert all times! REMEMBER: If the examiner is not talking, it does not mean you’ve done something wrong! The examiner wants you to focus on the road and not to miss any sign or pedestrian. If you keep talking, you may miss to see a sign or a pedestrian, etc..!
Check for posted speed signs. Drive by the speed limit. You can drive a little slower than the Max speed limit, but don’t drive too slow! Periodically glance at your speedometer as you are driving. DO NOT go over the speed limit.
Scan For Signs
Look for playground or school zone or pedestrian crossing signs. Use peripheral vision. Scan for pedestrians at intersections. Periodically check your mirrors. Focus and be alert as you are driving. Make sure you know which times and days playground / school zone signs are in effect.
At STOP SIGN, must come to a full stop. On RED Lights, must come to a full stop. Always must stop before the Line (if there is). DO NOT Roll stop. On red lights before making a right turn you MUST come to a full stop behind the stop line.
When making lane change, or moving to another unmarked lane or making a turn, make sure you shoulder check (cover your blind spot). Use your mirrors and turn signal lights and a shoulder check.
Start making your right turn from the far right-hand side lane or the right-hand curb lane. Make sure you make a right shoulder check, look at mirrors and turn on your right signal light in advance.
Start making your left turn from the lane close to the yellow line. (If you are on a one-way street, then start from the far left-hand side lane.) Make sure you make a left shoulder check, look at mirrors, turn on your left turn signal in advance AND BEFORE you make the left turn, make sure it is safe, no on-coming traffic. If you are yielding to on-coming traffic, make sure you don’t turn your wheels or your vehicle if you cannot see. Before you turn, check to the left to make sure no pedestrians crossing.
Do your lane change when safe. Check vehicle ahead, check mirrors, shoulder check and turn signal lights and make the lane change smoothly without over-steering. After the lane change, make sure to cancel signal light.
Before and during backing up from parking lot stall, look back, look left and right and use your mirrors. Back up slowly. Keep in your lane (unmarked lanes). Keep scanning for pedestrians and stop for them to cross. Drive slowly. Before you exit parking lot, you must come to a full stop before sidewalk.
Before and during backing up for a parallel park, look back, look left and right and use your mirrors. Park (tires) not more than 50 cm from the curb. Do not climb over the curb. You don’t need to turn on your signal light to start the parking. Your reversing lights are enough to show other traffic you are backing up for a parallel park.
Before pulling in for a hill park, you must check mirrors, shoulder check and turn on signal light to the right. Park closer to the curb (not more than 50 cm) Turn your wheels accordingly and roll onto the curb for your right-hand front tire to touch the curb. Don’t forget to put your park brake (hand, e-brake or foot brake). Make sure before you pull out, take park brake out, check mirror, shoulder check an left turn signal, then drive out when safe.
Slow down as you approach a yield sign intersection. Check to make sure it is safe to proceed. If safe, you don’t have to stop. You only stop at a yield sign if it is absolutely necessary (pedestrians to cross or traffic approaching). Make sure you check mirrors and shoulder check and turn signal light.
Keep in your lane. Remember that some roads do not have line markings. Streets with out lines are not necessarily one-way! Usually unmarked lanes have two lanes. Keep right of center. If you are turning right, move to the curb lane. Make sure you check mirror, shoulder check and signal as you are moving to another unmarked lane. Keep close to the yellow line if lanes are unmarked.
When you approach an intersection that has no traffic light, stop or yield sign, slow down and check both directions. If there’s a vehicle from the right-hand side, then you must give it the right of way by yielding. If no traffic from both directions, proceed safely. Uncontrolled intersections are mostly found on small quiet residential streets. IMPORTANT: You have to scan intersections to see if they have stop or yield signs!
